Kerama’s Hidden Gem: Zamami Island

Posted on July 18, 2024 by susie

While I might have given away my enthusiasm for 80s rocker Rick Springfield earlier on this blog, I can assure you that at heart I’m very much  a young backpacker with an insatiable thirst for adventure.

As you might also have read about here, I also love to introduce my readers to their next must-visit destination – Zamami Island!

Nestled in a group of islands collectively named Kerama, it’s a small glimpse of paradise that promises a dreamy combo of stunning natural beauty, vibrant marine life and a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for those of us looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

Let’s dive into why this haven should be at the top of your bucket list…

Pristine Beaches That’ll Steal Your Heart

First things first, the beaches.

Oh my, the beaches!

Picture soft, powdery white sand under your feet, crystal-clear turquoise waters gently lapping at the shore and a horizon that stretches into infinity.

Ama Beach and Furuzamami Beach are two of the most gorgeous spots you’ll ever lay your eyes on. Whether you’re a sun worshipper, a beachcomber, or just someone who loves to lounge and read a good book, these beaches have got you covered.

Snorkeling and Diving Adventures

Whether snorkeling or diving is your thing, Zamami is a tough utopia to top. Coral reefs around the island are teeming with unmissable marine life.

If colorful fish, playful sea turtles, and mesmerizing coral gardens sound appealing, then it’s time to grab your snorkel gear. Better yet, book a diving tour to explore the underwater wonders.

Trust me, swimming alongside these marine creatures is an experience you’ll never forget.

Hiking Trails & Breathtaking Views

For those who love getting out into nature on foot, Zamami offers several trails that provide breathtaking panoramic views.

The Observatory Tower hike is a must-do. It’s a bit of a climb so requires more than a little effort but once you reach the top, the view of the surrounding islands and the endless ocean will leave you in wonder.

Plus, the trail itself is surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Charming Village Vibes

One of the things I adore about Zamami Island is the unexpectedly charming village vibe.

The island is small with a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll find quaint cafes, local eateries, and friendly locals who are more than happy to share their homeland secrets. Be sure to try some local Okinawan dishes too, as they’re delicious and unique!

Forget The World and Reconnect with Nature

Zamami and the wider Kerama islands are the perfect place to unplug from the digital world and drift into nature. There’s something remarkable and liberating about being surrounded by the ocean, feeling the warm sun on your skin, and just living in the moment.

Whether you’re kayaking through the calm waters, taking a moment to enjoy the sunset, or lying beneath the stars on a clear night, you’ll find peace and serenity here.

Affordable and Accessible

Like most backpackers, you might be concerned about your budget.

It’s an island paradise that’s surprisingly affordable if you want it to be. You can find reasonably priced accommodations, from comfortable guesthouses to beachside campsites. It’s also very accessible (if a little slow to reach) – a short-ish ferry ride from Okinawa, Naha to be precise. There’s more on the ferries from Naha at the Zamami English Guide.

It’s an easy addition to your Japan itinerary, especially if you’re already exploring the southern islands.

Perfection for Solo Travelers

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe and welcomed on Zamami. As you probably know, that can’t be said of every island on this fair Earth

The locals are friendly, and the island has a relaxed, laid-back vibe that makes it easy to meet fellow travelers.

Whether you’re looking to make new friends or enjoy some solitude, the island offers the perfect balance.

Zamami Beckons

So, fellow adventurers, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re a beach bum (aren’t we all from time to time?), a diving enthusiast, a hiking fanatic, or just someone looking for a peaceful escape, this island has something for everyone.

Pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to create unforgettable memories on this idyllic island. It’s a hidden paradise that’s just waiting to be explored.

Rick Springfield’s Coming To Kerama!

Posted on June 3, 2022July 18, 2024 by susie

I was just reading all about one of my favorite rock gods on the web, and discovered that he’s out on tour this year! I’d heard nothing about it until I saw this on the WeLoveRickSpringfield.com site, and sure enough there’s tickets on sale through Live Nation.

Just when I was starting to doubt I’d ever get to see him make that guitar sing again (he’s well into his 70s now you know!), not only is Rick Springfield out on tour, but he’s stopping by right here in Gilford NH at the Pavilion. I am SO excited.

The last time I got to see Rick live was… well… I forget what the year was, but I’m pretty sure it was early 80s before the kids came along. By today’s standards it probably wasn’t even a big show, but back then i seemed live the event of the year.

Anyway, if you want to follow my lead, Rick Springfield tickets are on sale now at Live Nation.

His And Hers Zamami Island Aprons: Feminism In Action!

Posted on June 30, 2019July 18, 2024 by susie

Some people think of feminism as a way to oppress the male of the species – and in fact that couldn’t be further from the truth. Most experts prefer to talk about equality than feminism, as it’s a much more inclusive term reflecting our objectives. Today we’ve got a great example of how that can work in reality and normal life – buying a gift for couples!

The idea here is to choose a task which is typically address with a stereotype – in this case it’s cooking. The kitchen has been associated as a female domain for a very long time. Yes, there are men who are great cooks and love to do so, but your average family tends to let the culinary responsibilities fall to mom.

So what is this gift we’re talking about? Well, it could relate to pretty much anything you might tend to associate with women, but it’s actually kitchen aprons. It’s something that instinctively you are more likely to buy for the ladies, but is perfectly useful for both genders and can also be unisex.

Take a look at the topbestseller.reviews website, and you’ll see that they’ve included a run down of the best novelty kitchen aprons. On the face of it, there’s more targeting women than men, but they’re actually keen to point out that being novelty items it’s fine for anyone as a gift. Several are also available in a both male and female flavor too – meaning you can be totally fair and reasonable too.

On the other hand, looking at the wider apron market, you can see from Amazon that they’re overwhelmingly aimed at women which does show that there’s a bias. We’re not suggesting Amazon are responsible for that bias of course – its a simple case of supply and demand. Or should we say perceived supply and demand.

The same can apply across a wide range of areas in life too – it’s not just the kitchen by any stretch of the imagination. It’s even easy to find examples of things working the other way too, as there’s no reason to avoid buying a coverall for that hands on female relative who likes to fix things herself.

Times are certainly changing and with that comes the opportunity to demonstrate that you’re not stuck in the past yourself. Gender stereotyping is slowly fading, and that’s got to be a welcome change for everyone involved. Employers get access to a wider choice of employees, and anyone can work towards doing the career they dreamed of as a child.

A simple thing like buying his and hers aprons for the kitchen can show that cooking can be a fun and inclusive activity for mom and pops and at the same time teach the kids an important lesson that everyone can muck in with the chores and have fun!

Women & Feminism

Posted on November 11, 2018July 18, 2024 by susie

Women feminism is a term which is used as cultural, political and even economic purposes with the aim of establishing women rights and legal provisions in the society. Historians suggest that feminism has been in three faces. The first phase extended from the late 18th century to the 19th century, while the second lasted between the nineteen sixties and the nineteen seventies. The third wave of feminism started in the nineteen nineties and is ongoing to date.

Throughout history, women Feminism revolved around the legal rights available or unavailable to women. Right after the Second World War, the women started petitioning for the earn wages in the work place just as the men did. Later, they would lodge petitions seeking to have the right to enter into binding contracts in business, own property and even vote. As years went by, the feminism movement took up issues that represented the bodily integrity and independence of the woman. Such include the right to productive rights. This included the right to access contraception, the right to abort and the right to access prenatal care.

For younger girls, the women feminism movement sought to protect them by petitioning the enactment of laws that would prohibit domestic violence, rape and sexual harassment. The feminism movement always took issues of women rights to the work place, where they demanded equal treatment between the female and male gender, equal pay and maternity leave among the gender specific discrimination that was common in those days.

In the 1960s, the second women feminism led to the entrant of more racial diversity. As such, much of the women petition during this time targeted ending discrimination. During this time, women craved for more inclusion in the political and economic arenas. Women were especially opposed to the sex-based power structures that favored men in most patriarchal societies across the world.

The women feminism movement was vital to analyzing women oppression in the past and suggesting ways through which the gender imbalance would be corrected. However, this was not always easy especially because women were operating in societies that had deep rooted stereotypes of what women should or should not do. Unfortunately, these stereotypes not only affected how the larger society viewed women, but it also affected how women perceived their own abilities against the male abilities.

Women feminism therefore not only had the responsibility of proving that the woman indeed would do more than sit at home doing domestic chores, giving birth and waiting for the man to provide for her, but had the enormous responsibility of convincing women that they would attain more fulfillment from utilizing their capabilities outside the home.

Even today, and especially in the conservative or developing cultures, women feminism is still involves petitioning for more rights to be granted to the girl child, young mothers and career women. The argument of feminism is that women through out the world had been socialized to believe that they could only find meaning and identity in a family setting where they would take up their husbands name, bear him children and live their entire lives looking after the children.
